Aboriginal Initiatives: Office opens off campus

The University of Saskatchewan has a long history of bringing programming to and creating connections with First Nation and Métis communities in Saskatchewan. Building on that tradition is the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives at the English River First Nation urban reserve.

These connections strength-en the university’s ability to deliver on its Aboriginal engagement strategy, said Joan Greyeyes, so the University of Saskatchewan was looking for further opportunities to engage with First Nation and Métis communities.

Nasser Centre features local artists

Empty wall space at the Edwards School of Business K.W. Nasser Centre in downtown Saskatoon is being put to good use as a venue for displaying the work of local artists. Lynn Shyluk, professional programs co-ordinator, is shown in the foyer of the centre, surrounded by some of the 32 pieces by members of the Bridge City Artists that make up the current exhibition. Since it opened in September of 2009, the centre has hosted shows of work by numerous artists including Laurel Rossnagel, Rochelle Brockman, Lindsay Love-Ingram and Carrie Allen, by fine arts students Elizabeth McCorkell, Michael Peterson, Jordan Miller and Neema Vaghela, as well as by groups like The Mix.

Government funding first step towards more childcare space

It was May 1, 1912 when the University of Saskatchewan held its first convocation ceremony. In the auditorium of what was then called the Saskatoon Collegiate Institute and is now Nutana Collegiate, seven graduands wound their way to the platform to receive their BA degrees before an audience of students, family, faculty, members of Senate and the Board of Governors as well as a contingent of the general public, curious to see what this ceremony entailed.

U of S centre focuses on the North

Saskatchewan’s North has been neglected for quite some time, but the International Centre for Northern Governance and Development (ICNGD) at the U of S has been working to change that.

“Historically, the North has been neglected in all of Canada, not just Saskatchewan,” explained Greg Poelzer, director of the centre and associate professor of political studies. “In Saskatchewan, it comes down to simple math—fewer than 40,000 people live in the North, less than four per cent of the province’s population. It is a bit of a case of out of sight, out of mind for the remaining 96 per cent of Saskatchewan.”
