Deaths

Following are brief notes on the passing of U of S people. These are not meant to be obituaries, and we apologize for cases where information was not available.

George J. Thiessen
passed away May 3 in Saskatoon at age 91. He retired in 1975 as a faculty member in the College of Education, after a career of 45 years as a school teacher and teacher educator.

Dr. Murray Adaskin
passed away May 6 at age 94. He retired in 1973 as a professor and composer-in-residence in the Dept. of Music. He was long-time head of the department, organized many concerts, from 1957-60 conducted the Saskatoon Symphony, and instigated the sale of the Amati instruments to the U of S. He was a Professor Emeritus of Music.

 

George C. Baxter
passed away May 18 at age 64. He retired in 2000 as a professor in the College of Commerce, where he taught for 35 years. He was a Professor Emeritus of Accounting. During his career he also assisted the Saskatchewan and Canadian Institutes of Chartered Accountants.

Jacob A. Schmidt
passed away May 28 in Saskatoon at age 90. He retired in 1980 after working as a caretaker at the U of S for 17 years.

Dorothy May Green
passed away July 3 in Calgary at age 81. She retired in 1985 from a position in the Controller's Office. She worked there for 24 years.

Kurt Klingenberg
passed away July 4 in Saskatoon at age 79. He retired in 1988 from a non-academic position in the Department of Microbiology in the College of Medicine.

 

Thomas Frazer
passed away July 4. He retired from the U of S in 1978 from his position as a steamfitter.

 

Isabel J. Bryenton
passed away July 6 at age 83. She retired in 1983 from a non-academic position in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, after working there for 28 years.

William A.S. Sarjeant
passed away July 8 in Saskatoon at age 66. He was a professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the time of his death. He was a noted author on many topics, including marine microfossils, history of earth sciences, and fossil footprints. He also wrote a series of fantasy adventure books, was an authority on Sherlock Holmes and detective fiction, was a heritage activist, and performed traditional folk music.

Geraldine (Geri) Limet
passed away Aug. 29 at age 56. She was a clerk steno in the Dean's Office in the College of Agriculture at the time of her death. She had previously worked in several colleges, including the Biology Department (College of Arts & Science) and the College of Engineering.

Leone R. Banting
passed away Aug. 28. She retired from the U of S in 1990 from her position as a clerk steno (department unknown).

 

Kryn Jacob deGoede
passed away Aug. 29 in Saskatoon. He retired in 1989 from his position as an instrument-maker in the Engineering Shops of the College of Engineering.

 

Jacqueline Molaro
passed away Sept. 3 at age 50. She was a staff member in the Office of the Registrar (Student & Enrolment Services Division) at the time of her death. She worked at the U of S for 18 years.

Marjorie A. Hume
passed away Sept. 14. She retired from the U of S Library in 1987 from her position as a support staff member.

 

Bertha Louise Bartindale
passed away Sept. 30 in Calgary at age 78. She retired in 1989 from a long-time position in the University Archives.

 

Dr. Thomas W. Clewes
passed away Oct. 1 in Okotoks, Alta. at age 84. He retired in 1984 from his position as a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He was at the U of S for 15 years, and after retirement was made a Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering.
