Alumni Association presents awards to outstanding alumni

Award recipients

The University of Saskatchewan Alumni Association honored seven of its most outstanding alumni at an awards ceremony in Marquis Hall Oct. 16.

Each year the Alumni Association Awards recognize the significant contributions U of S graduates make professionally, in their community, and around the world.

U of S President Peter MacKinnon, told the more than 100 alumni, students and College representatives gathered at the ceremony that "the University of Saskatchewan is extremely proud of the accomplishments of our alumni. They bring great honor to the U of S and are an excellent example for our current and future students. The recipients are valuable members of our society."

The awards were bestowed on the recipients by Alumni Association President Susan Milburn and Rob Theoret, Chair of the 2002 Alumni Successes Committee. The awards were presented to:

  • Alumni Award of Achievement: Dr. Vera Pezer (BA'62;MA'64;PhD'77) - retired U of S Associate Vice-President, Student Affairs and Services.

  • Alumni Honor Award: Dr. Milkha Singh Aulakh (BSc'72 Guru Nanak Dev Univ, India; MSc'74 Punjab Agric. Univ, India; PhD'83 U of S) - Senior Soil Scientist and Professor at Punjab Agricultural University in India.

  • Alumni Service Award: Patricia S. Currie (BA'59; MA'62) - former council and executive member of the U of S Alumni Association.

  • Alumni Humanitarian Award: Delva (BA'58) and Norman Rebin (BA'59) - champions of free speech and crusaders for peace worldwide.

  • Alumni Mentorship Award: Patricia (Pat) A. Thomas BComm'78, U of S; CA'80, Sask; CACE'00, UVic) - Chartered Accountant and Assistant Professor in the College of Commerce.

  • Outstanding Young Alumni Award: Chris Labrecque (BSc'99; BE(EP)'99) - Engineer and co-founder of Analog Design Automation in Ottawa, Ontario.

The Alumni Association also presented a number of student scholarships and awards during the evening ceremony. They included:

Entrance Scholarships to: Samantha Booth, Carly Brown, Nicole Detillieux, Melissa Einhorn, Adam Fenwick, Blake Gill, Julia Laforge, Andrea macMillan, Stacey McPeek, Jennifer Mullens, Marissa Myers, Hilary Nelson, Vanessa Rey, Danelle Stutt, Lauren Weir, and Marina Williston.

Continuing Student Scholarships to: David Stock, Jennifer Robertson, Nathan Degenhart, Sarah Smith, and Jennifer Crookshanks.

The Graduating Student Scholarship for 2002 to: Lisa Lejbak.

Student Awards to: Christine Fedorak, Christina Friesen, Reid McGonigle, and David Stock.
