Rhodes named dean of WCVM- More-than-30-year veteran of Vet-Med College has most recently served as acting dean -
Although his title has changed, Charles Rhodes' attitude toward the opportunities and challenges facing the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) remains the same - "We have to be sure that we move ahead." Rhodes, who has been WCVM's acting dean for a number of months, was confirmed in the post of dean by the U of S Board of Governors at its Jan. 31 meeting. A 30-year-plus member of the faculty, Rhodes' administrative experience includes eight years as head of the Department of Herd Medicine & Theriogenology, and nine years as Associate Dean of Research. In an interview after his appointment to the five-year renewable term, Rhodes said the College has had much good news recently, including the signing of a new interprovincial funding agreement and a recent injection of funds by the federal government. But, he added, the challenges remain - recruiting top-notch faculty and graduate students as well as undertaking a major fundraising drive within the College as part of an overall campus campaign. The Vet-Med College is also looking at an accreditation site visit the first week of December. The college has been on a two-year downgraded accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association's Council on Education but Rhodes believes the new funding agreement involving the four western provinces as well as the new federal money will help address the association's concerns. Born and raised in southern Wisconsin, the Professor of Large Animal Clinical Sciences earned both a B.Sc. and DVM from the University of Minnesota as well as an M.Sc. from Iowa State University. He came in Saskatoon after serving as a veterinary advisor in Vietnam under contract to the University of Minnesota. Rhodes' research has focused on the effects of environments on intensive swine operations, swine production medicine, swine diseases and anti-microbial use in swine production. He has continued clinical practice, providing professional advice to veterinarians and livestock producers. U of S Vice-Provost Mark Evered said colleagues and students recognize and appreciate Rhodes' "integrity, professional skills, hard work and extraordinary commitment to the Veterinary College and the University".
