Univ. of Manitoba gets casino security systemWINNIPEG - The University of Manitoba's security system has just won big with the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation, getting a donation of high-tech security equipment formerly used in casinos. A story by Dale Barbour in the Jan. 24 edition of the U of M Bulletin says that after a major upgrade to its own system, Manitoba Lotteries is giving its former security matrix and central control system to the U of M. The package includes the hardware necessary to add dozens of security cameras and closed-circuit TV to buildings throughout U of M's Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses. There have been requests at the campuses for cameras in some areas prone to vandalism, graffiti, or locker theft. MLC Vice-President of Communications Susan Olynik said, "We hope (it) will contribute to the enhancement of safety on U of M campuses." Lotteries Vice-President Gerry Boose said, "When we became aware there was a need at the U of M it seemed like a good public service to donate the equipment rather than just put it on the marketplace." U of M Associate Vice-President of Administration Debbie McCallum said, "The university really appreciates your donation. We never would have been able to afford anything like this." Typically Manitoba Lotteries would have auctioned its surplus equipment, but that wouldn't have brought in much money. U of M Security Services Director Jim Raftis played broker for the donation when he learned about the surplus Manitoba Lotteries equipment.
