Kuwaiti special education co-ordinator Faiez Fadel Alhashimi, right, presents an ornate case crafted by his students in Kuwait to Betty Rohr, a graduate student working as an assistant for a program called Kuwait Advanced Professional Development in Special Education offered Sept. 11-Oct. 1 at the U of S by the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education. The gift-giving took place at the wrap-up awards luncheon Oct. 1, when the 10 participating Kuwaiti professionals - including special ed. teachers, a social worker, a speech therapist, and a physiotherapist - received their professional development certificates and presented their program hosts with lovely Kuwaiti shawls, chests and other items. Department Secretary Carole Sunley, who helped to co-ordinate the program, says it was developed under the direction of Associate Professor Fred Reekie, who tailored it specifically for the Kuwaiti visitors. This is the first program a Kuwaiti group has taken in the College of Education, but Sunley says because it was such a hit with the visiting professionals, there are discussions about more programs for Kuwaitis in the future.
