Awards presented to Dentistry students
For the ninth year, the family and friends of a young Dentistry graduate who died tragically at age 23 have presented awards in his honour to U of S Dentistry students. At the College of Dentistry's fall welcome banquet on Sept. 13, two Dr. Kirk Johnston Spirit of Dentistry Memorial Awards were presented, in the value of $5,000 each, to Year 2 student Sandra Endersby and Year 3 student Hilary Clark. Johnston graduated from the College of Dentistry at age 22 and died accidentally three days after his 23rd birthday, in August 1994. Shortly after that his parents, Gaylene and Murray Johnston, and friends established the award. Since 1995 it has gone to 16 Dentistry students, "for enthusiasm, healthy and positive attitude, creativity, leadership, humanitarianism and motivation". Dentistry's College Development Officer Lynn Danbrook, says the College deeply appreciates the Johnstons' continued warmth and generosity in supporting the award.
