| The U of S Jazz Ensemble 2002 and 2003 has released a new CD entitled Bumper Crop II: Outstanding in Their Field. Under the direction of Dean McNeill, associate professor of brass/jazz in the Department of Music and featuring guest artist Brian O'Kane on trumpet and flugelhorn, the CD includes tunes such as I Left My Heart in San Francisco, Where or When and Bunsen Burner. The liner notes reveal that the complicated recording process involved recording the piano in a room one floor above the rest of the ensemble in the Education Building. |

A classic 1984 publication from the Canadian Phytopathological Society - Diseases of Field Crops in Canada - has been updated and reissued with a strong Saskatchewan component. Edited in part by Professor Emeritus of Biology Robin Morrall, the book is a comprehensive guide to identifying diseases in cereal, oilseed, pulse, forage and specialty crops and its sales in this province exceed those in any other jurisdiction. |
| Derek Eager, professor of Computer Science, has recently been recognized by ISI as a highly-cited author, one of only 224 computer science research so designated in the world, and only one of only five in Canada. The selection is based on the number of citations received by a research in a given category. |

Baljit Singh, associate professor in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences, has been elected as the Canadian delegate to the European Respiratory Society for a three-year term. He also received, in April, the Young Faculty Travel Award from the American Association of Anatomists. |
| The job of analysing and researching business opportunities for the University has been taken on by Mark Bucsis, new to Corporate Administration. A graduate of the U of S in 1979, Bucsis comes to the University with extensive experience in finance and accounting in Saskatoon, Toronto and Vancouver. |

University Advancement has announced the addition of three new staff members. Jan Kalinowski, who has over 20 years of connections with the University, will start Oct. 1 as development officer in the College of Commerce. Wendy Roe, formerly with SIAST and the Saskatchewan Abilities Council, where she played a major role in developing that organization's planned giving program, will fill the position of administrative assistant, planned and major gifts. And, Lisa Piskor is a new clerk stenographer in the Customer Service Centre. Piskor relocated to Saskatoon from Winnipeg where she was an administrative secretary for the Maintenance Enforcement Program and Winnipeg Sheriff Service. |

| The U of S Alumni Association has announced the winners of the 2003 Alumni Association Awards: Award of Achievement - Louise H. Forsyth, BA('55), MA('63), PhD('66); Service Award - Donald Stefiuk, BSc('73), MD('77); Humanitarian Award - Peter Zakreski, BA('61); Honour Award - Sharon Butala, BA('63); Mentorship Award - Alain Thomorat, BA('95); and Young Alumni Award - Benjamin Voss, BE('99). |

Agriculture professor Gordon Rowland is the new recipient of the W.J. White Professorship in the Department of Plant Sciences. The selection was made based on Rowland's successful career as a linseed flax breeder with the Crop Development Centre and the professorship will enable him to further his studies in plan sciences. |
| Colleen McKay, research officer in University Advancement, will represent the U of S on this year's United Way campaign as a Loaned Representative. Her work with the United Way will continue until Dec. 15. During that time, her research position will be filled by Dean Hall who most recently served in Communications with the Saskatchewan Labour Force Development Board. |

| The University of Saskatchewan has been designated a world leader in its innovative use of technology for teaching and research by the New Media Consortium, a not-for-profit organization that connects colleges, universities, museums and technology companies that are all exploring new ways to teaching, learning and doing research. The U of S Division of Media & Technology led the way in achieving this designation. |

Two new books published this summer by Bill Waiser, professor in the Department of History, both focus on Saskatchewan history. Looking Back (with Paul Dederick) is based on the CBC Saskatchewan TV series by the same name while an important historical event is detailed in All Hell Can't Stop Us: The On-to-Ottawa Trek and Regina Riot. Waiser is currently working on a history of the province for the 2005 centennial. |
| Morris Altman, Head of the Department of Economics, has been elected President of the Society for the Advancement of Behavioral Economics. Widely published in the area of behavioral economics, Altman is also editor of the Journal of Socio-Economics, published by Elsevier Science. |

Associate Professor in Kinesiology Donna Goodwin has been elected treasurer of the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity, an organization that promotes physically active lifestyles for people around the world with disabilities. It is also plays a leadership role in physical activity research and practice. |
| Wei Xiao, a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the College of Medicine, has been appointed to a five-year term as head of the department, effective. Sept. 1, 2003. |
