Letter To The Editor

Kupsch brought out best in people

To the editor:

In his long and useful life Dr. Walter Kupsch (Professor Emeritus of Geological Sciences, who passed away July 5) pursued many interests, but he will be remembered most for his love of the English language. Over the years he developed formidable literary skills, all the more remarkable for having been acquired. He bought to bear on the most serious matters his understanding and appreciate of English prose style, enhanced by a wonderful, ironic sense of humour. For his colleagues, Walter's wit was a never-ending source of amusement and delight, and in the classroom it made him a hero of legendary proportions.

Dr. Kupsch's resolute character and his loyal, magnanimous spirit were informed by good Dutch roots and a superb education. Principled and deeply reflective, he had strong convictions which, whether in or out of favour, he upheld fearlessly and with unwavering loyalty. The winds of change in popular opinion were of no consequence to him. Walter's natural civility and his tolerance and respect for the opinions of others enabled him to remain free and detached even in the face of the most violent disagreements. For him, mere differences of opinion could never imperil more important human relationships.

Dr. Kupsch's enduring commitment was to the North and its people, and to them he leaves an irreplaceable legacy as both scientist and public servant.

Endowed with impressive intellectual gifts and a magnetic personality, Walter Kupsch brought out the best in everyone. His matchless gift for friendship inspired and consoled generations of students and colleagues, who will remember him as the best of companions, the most gifted of teachers, a brave and loyal friend.
