Cross-dressing campus entertainment featured in new Library Link art exhibit

The long-standing tradition of cross-dressing shows and entertainment at the U of S features prominently in a new campus exhibit and accompanying virtual online show being curated by former University Library staff member Neil Richards.

The exhibit, All Frocked Up: Glimpses of Cross-Dressing in Saskatchewan, opens in the Library Link Gallery Sept. 21, complete with more than 50 photos, as well as artifacts like theatre posters, costumes and artworks.

Richards says the show covers various types of gender impersonation practiced as entertainment in Saskatchewan from the early 1900s to the present.

It includes exhibits from popular shows at Saskatoon theatres over the years, and from rural Saskatchewan social life, such as mock weddings.

Many U of S Archives photos show that female and male impersonation has frequently been a featured type of campus entertainment.
