Computer glitch sidelines sign

Messages will shine again soon on the electronic sign.

A computer malfunction was responsible for the lights being out for the past couple of weeks on the University’s electronic sign that greets visitors and passers-by at the Wiggins Ave. entrance to campus.

Doris Vanderkooi, administrative assistant in University Advancement, said the computer that controls the sign was sent out for repairs but the job took longer than expected. As a result, the sign that flashes messages and event information has been temporarily out of commission. The Customer Service Centre of University Advancement oversees use of the sign.

Under the cold beverage contract between the University and Coca-Cola, the soft-drink company is responsible for all costs related to the upkeep of the sign, Vanderkooi said. The 10-year exclusive contract went into effect July 1, 1998.
