Feds top up funding for CLS operations

The federal government announced April 6 that through NSERC (the Natural Science & Engineering Research Council) and Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD), it will provide an extra $19 million toward operation of the Canadian Light Source synchrotron which is schedule to open this fall.

The additional money brings to $89.8 million the total operating budget of the facility over five years. The new amount, which was provided for in the March federal budget, includes $16 million from NSERC and up to $3 million from WD.

Once operational, the CLS is expected to enhance Canada’s competitiveness in various scientific disciplines. It is also expected to serve as a magnet to attract top-calibre researchers to the University of Saskatchewan.

Bill Thomlinson, CLS executive director, said the new federal funding will play a part in ensuring the facility can provide national and international users of the synchrotron with the level of support they require.
