The U of S continues its response to concerns over campus safety in the wake of a sexual assault last July and another reported assault in November.

Tony Whitworth, Vice-President of Finance & Resources, was to hold a news conference today, April 16, to release the results of an independent safety review conducted earlier this year by recently retired University of Calgary Vice-President of Finance Keith Winter and U of C Chief Business Development Officer Jennifer Yip Choy.

Whitworth has held a series of meetings in the past two weeks with campus units and groups interested in the issue, including CASA, the ad hoc Coalition Against Sexual Assault, which came together to put pressure on the University to increase safety measures.

He is expected to suggest what action the U of S will take to help prevent sexual assaults and to respond to them when they do happen.

The U of S Students’ Union held a Day of Action on Sexual Assault Prevention on April 1, with self-defense demonstrations in Place Riel and a noon-hour rally in the Bowl. The rally, which attracted fewer than 50 people, heard from USSU President Robin Mowat, CASA member Liz Quinlan, Associate Vice-President for Student & Enrolment Services David Hannah, and Security Services Special Constable Dave Reid. Reid and Quinlan encouraged people to use the campus SafeWalk program for walks to their vehicles.
