Moms less-likely faculty

BERKELEY, Calif. – Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have concluded from a recent study that women with children are much less likely than men to obtain tenured positions at universities.

The study found that among women who have children within five years of completing a PhD, 56 per cent are in tenured positions while 44 per cent are either in ‘second-tier’ jobs like academic research or are waiting for tenure more than 12 years after graduating. For men, the numbers are dramatically different – of those who start families at the same stage, 77 per cent are in tenured positions, with 23 per cent in lower positions.

The study also showed that only one in three women who take fast-track university jobs while childless ever become mothers.
