AUCC likes what it hears in Throne Speech

OTTAWA – The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) has responded favourably to the federal government’s Feb. 2 Speech from the Throne, notably its emphasis on more access to education opportunities and its recognition of the link between economic success and the flow of knowledge.

“We’re pleased that the government of Canada recognizes the importance of being a knowledge-rich country, with internationally competitive university research,” said Robert Giroux, AUCC president. “We look forward to working with Canada’s new national science advisor to continue to build a national science agenda.”

The organization that represents 93 public and private not-for-profit universities and university-degree level colleges also applauds a plan for a new grant for low-income students and higher loan limits in the Canada Student Loans Programs as a means of enhancing accessibility to higher education.

At the same time, the AUCC encourages the government to work with provinces and territories to ensure universities have the capacity to meet the growing demand for higher education.
