    Viola Woodhouse, professor in the Department of Philosophy, St. Thomas More College, has been named the recipient of the Margaret Dutli Professional and Community Service Award. The award was presented at a recent STM Corporation banquet.
    English graduate student Tasha Hubbard received the Dept. of Canadian Heritage’s Canada Award for her documentary Two Worlds Colliding, an examination of Saskatoon’s “freezing deaths” and the racial divide within the city. Written and directed by Hubbard, the film was produced by the National Film Board. The award was presented at the 2005 Gemini Awards ceremony Nov. 17 in Toronto.

    Heinz-Bernhard Kraatz of the Dept. of Chemistry recently received the 2006 Award for Pure or Applied Inorganic Chemistry from the Canadian Society for Chemistry. Honouring chemists within 10 years of their first professional appointment, the award is presented to those who have made an outstanding contribution to inorganic chemistry and demonstrated exceptional promise.
    The position of Director of Student Information Systems has been filled by Jonathan Moore-Wright, a graduate of the College of Engineering who has worked at the University since 1988 in roles that have included manager of the Engineering computer centre, manager of the Peter Nikiforuk Innovative Teaching and Learning Centre, and project manager for PAWS. Angie Giesbrecht, acting director since July, has returned to the position of business analyst.

    Fredlund
    Delwyn Fredlund, professor emeritus of Civil Engineering, has been named to a three-year term on the governing council of the National Research Council of Canada. In 2004, Fredlund received the Order of Canada for his contributions to geotechnical engineering as well as his work for Canadian Food for the Hungry International.
    Morris Altman, head of the Dept. of Economics, will give the 2006 Professor Alexander Brody Distinguished Service Lecture at Yeshiva University, in New York City, in February. His address at Yeshiva, one of the leading academic research institutions in the U.S., will be “Is There Free Will in Economics? The Ethical Economy and Free Markets”.
