Tunnel restrictions queried

To the editor:

I write today to explain the situation we here in SESD [Student & Enrolment Services Division] face in regards to the new tunnel connecting the College Building with Saskatchewan Hall.

I work with the IT unit in SESD and provide support to our business units. These units are spread across campus, and include the Student Health Centre, located in Saskatchewan Hall. With slippery sidewalks fast approaching, we’ve patiently waited to gain access to this tunnel to provide a safer and more effecient means of transporting equipment between our units. Unfortunately, the tunnel remains ‘closed’, and attempts to gather information have been met mostly with silence.

I understand that there are security concerns regarding access to the residence hallways in Sask Hall – however, we already have this access. We are currently able to move about freely within Sask Hall, but are unable to access it via the tunnel.

Considering this, and the fact that other employees (maintenance, facilities, and/or custodial staff) have the necessary keys, why is it that I cannot? As support staff, we should have the same access to keys as any other support staff that travels between the buildings.

If there are other concerns that I’m not aware of, I would love to hear about them, but the security argument simply does not hold water in this circumstance.
