Thiessen ends Board term

Gordon Thiessen has decided not to seek another three-year term on the U of S Board of Governors, leaving the position of chair open until that body meets again Feb. 4.

The last meeting for the U of S graduate and former head of the Bank of Canada was Nov. 10. Thiessen was appointed to the Board in July 2001. His vacancy will be filled by government appointment but University Secretary Gordon Barnhart explained that under a 1999 agreement between U of S President Peter MacKinnon and then-premier Roy Romanow, no appointment will be made without University approval.

The board is comprised of government appointees and members elected by the University senate as well as one member each from faculty and the student body. Barnhart was unsure whether Thiessen's spot will be filled by the Feb. 4 meeting date. Either way, the current board members will elect a chair at that gathering. Board member Shelley Brown currently holds the position of vice-chair.
