CLS/Soleil formalize relationship

Sharing expertise about the intricate arrays of magnets that produce a synchrotron’s brilliant X-rays is at the heart of a memorandum of understanding signed in early October between the Canadian Light Source and the new French Synchrotron SOLEIL.

In a news release issued after the signing, CLS Executive Director William Thomlinson said the memorandum formalizes the relationship between the two institutions and bodes well for future growth and development.

According to Denis Raoux, director-general of SOLEIL, the signing “is the first step towards creating scientific understanding that will be of mutual benefit to both facilities. There are many unique opportunities at the Canadian Light Source that do not exist at SOLEIL.”

In the past 18 months, the CLS has signed similar memos with the Australian Synchrotron involving research into medical imaging and applications for synchrotron light in mining, and with the Italian Sincrotrone ELETTRA for the development of a life science imaging program.
