For the general public, the first outward sign that 2007 is a special year at the University of Saskatchewan will be new banners mounted on light standards along College Drive.
The 10 different banner images attempt to capture “some significant events, people and structures of our University’s history,” said Cindy Paquette, director of government relations and organizer of the banner project, which is now in its fourth year.
There were obvious choices, said Paquette – the College Building, the Memorial Gates, and Walter Murray, the University’s first president. The remaining images attempt to capture more general themes but the selection process became more difficult.
“For example, how do we capture all of what the University has meant for agriculture in this province in one simple image?” The answer was the Laird Lentil, one of some 270 varieties of field crops released by the Crop Development Centre over its history, and a lentil that set the standard in many export markets.
The other banners will feature the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron, Aboriginal scholar and honorary Doctor of Laws recipient Freda Ahenakew, Canadian historian and educator Hilda Neatby, Huskie Athletics, one-time faculty member and Nobel Prize winner Gerhard Herzberg, and the Amati instruments.
The city installed the banners on Jan. 3, in time for the campus launch of centennial celebrations Jan.12. They will remain in place throughout 2007.
