A penny saved…

September 21, 2007

A fraction of the 1 million pennies needed to recreate Gerald Ferguson’s piece entitled 1,000,000 Pennies.

Kent Archer, left, director of the University Art Collection, Leah Taylor, centre, with the College Building Art Gallery, and gallery volunteer Lindsey Sharman pour onto the gallery floor just a fraction of the 1 million pennies needed to recreate Gerald Ferguson’s piece entitled 1,000,000 Pennies. The conceptual work is part of the current exhibition Me & Them. To prepare for the show, the Royal Canadian Mint shipped about three tons of shiny new pennies to campus in two Brinks trucks. The coins had to be unboxed and unrolled before being poured into a pile. The show runs until Nov. 30 when Archer and his staff will begin re-rolling 1 million pennies.
