Richard Florizone, vice-president of finance and resources, has been named head of a new 12-person Uranium Development Partnership to advise the provincial government on further development of Saskatchewan's uranium resources. Mandated to present a final report to the government by March 31, 2009, the group will make specific recommendations on value-added opportunities best suited for the development of the industry. Florizone holds a PhD in nuclear physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dwight Newman, associate dean in the College of Law, has received this year's Outstanding Young Alumni award from the University of Regina Alumni Association. Newman earned a BA from Luther College in 1996 before going on to complete four other degrees including a law degree at the U of S and three from Oxford.
Finding a way to turn cold concrete and asphalt rubble into new road building materials without any residual waste has earned Curtis Berthelot an Achievement in Business Excellence (ABEX) award. Berthelot, director of the Saskatchewan Centre of Excellence for Transportation and Infrastructure in the College of Engineering, received the Physical Environment Award, which recognizes excellence in programs, products and services that improve the physical environment and the health and safety of workers.

Rhonda Goodtrack, an aboriginal student advisor with the Native Access Program to Nursing/Medicine, has been elected the director of the Saskatchewan Region Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada. Goodtrack, originally from Wood Mountain Lakota Nation, is a graduate of the U of S nursing program.
Karen Semchuk, graduate faculty member in the College of Nursing, has been appointed acting director of the School of Public Health for a six-month term starting Jan. 1, 2009.
The selection committee has named Dale Ward as the next Thorvaldson Professor in the Department of Chemistry for a five-year term that extends to June 30, 2013. The professorship provides faculty members with annual funding to support travel, research and professional expenses.

Che Kan Leong, professor emeritus in the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education, has returned from a term as a visiting professor in the Department of Psychology at The University of Hong Kong. While there, he also accepted an invitation to lecture at the Academy of Psychology and Behaviour at Tianjin Normal University, one of China's leading research institutions.

A former programmer analyst in the Facilities Management Division, Rachel Heidecker has joined the University Library as project manager for Library Systems Support.

Lawrence Brawley, Canada Research Chair in Physical Activity for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in the College of Kinesiology, has been named an active fellow in the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.

Baljit Singh, professor of veterinary anatomy in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, has been appointed to a three-year term as section editor (immunology/ hematology) of the journal Cell and Tissue Research.
