Enrolment up at UBC
VANCOUVER – Growth in out of province enrolment will increase overall enrolment at the University of British Columbia this fall even as the number of B.C. students declines.
In a news release, the university said its Vancouver campus will welcome 5,405 first-year students this fall, up from 5,035 in 2007.
New PhD offered at Brock
ST. CATHARINES – Brock University is now offering a new PhD program in Applied Health Sciences that features three fields of study with dramatic potential for positive impact on the health of individuals, groups, populations, and even organizations, according to a news release.
The program encompasses study in the fields of behavioural and population health, health biosciences and social and cultural health.

WINNIPEG – Researchers at the University of Manitoba have discovered that the front line in the battle against the next pandemic or viral infection that threatens hospitals and nursing homes may be on the computer rather than in a clinic or lab.
The researchers looked at the spread of previous epidemics like the great 1918 flu epidemic and also more recent examples, to reveal clues that suggest intervention strategies.
U of R prof honoured
REGINA – A University of Regina professor has become the first Canadian to win a prestigious biology education award from the American Society of Mammalogists (ASM).
Mark Brigham, specialist in the ecology and behaviour of bats, recieved the 2008 Joseph Grinnell Award. Brigham's nomination came from a group of colleagues and current and former students.
