To celebrate a century of Arts and Science, the college will be hosting an all-years reunion for alumni and friends June 19-21.
As one of the founding colleges at the University of Saskatchewan along with Agriculture, the College of Arts and Science began offering classes in rented accommodations in downtown Saskatoon in 1909, one year after it was announced that Saskatoon would be the home of the province’s first university.
Jo-Ann Dillon, dean of the College of Arts and Science, thinks the 100th year reunion symbolizes the importance of having a liberal arts school at the heart of the institution. “A liberal education was the foundation of an educated person,” said Dillon. “With many artists, writers, public service employees and leaders from the college, I think it’s a testament to how the province has progressed.”
The reunion kicks off June 19 with a barbeque for alumni and retired faculty at Louis’ Campus Pub - a spot many will remember fondly - and finishes up Sunday, June 21 with a pancake breakfast at the Park Town hotel. Other events include presentations by faculty experts, a coffee house featuring performances by alumni, students and faculty and a garden party reception.
Organizers of the reunion said they were surprised when some older alumni requested a kaiser tournament as one of the events. So, to remind them of their days in residence, a tournament will take place Saturday, June 20 in the afternoon, but as the registration brochure stated, “this one won’t go all night like the kaiser games you played in residence.”
According to Dillon, having a reunion is part of a larger strategy to reconnect with alumni. Given the size of the college, Arts and Science is trying new strategies of engagement including a new publication, DiversitA&S magazine which features profiles, events and articles about Arts and Science grads from around the world.
“We’re like an orange,” said Dillon of the college. “We have a lot of segments, but we’re still an orange.”
