The North Road will not be paved with silver and gold, but it will be paved with green road technology using recycled asphalt and concrete from renovations like the health sciences project.

According to Daryl Cherry, project manager with planning and development in the Facilities Management Division, the approximately 500m-long North Road, running from Campus Drive to Perimeter Road toward Innovation Place, was not built to withstand heavy traffic. With a view to improving the long-term stability of all roads on campus, Cherry said North Road will become a research test strip for three different green road technologies.

The north section will use a topcoat of hot mix asphalt, the middle section a cold mix and the south end will use inter-locking concrete paving stones.

Recycling asphalt and concrete saves landfills from a tremendous amount of waste as well as the energy needed to transport trucks full of rubble to and from the landfill, said Cherry.

He expects the roadwork to be done by fall.
