MacEwan now a university
EDMONTON - On Sept. 24, Grant MacEwan College received official permission to change its name to Grant MacEwan University.
In a news release, the new university said the title not only enhances the public perception of what the institution offers but will benefit students because of the global recognition associated with the name ‘university’. Established in 1971, MacEwan currently offers undergraduate degrees in arts, child and youth care, nursing, commerce and sciences.
Fine replaces expulsion
ST. JOHN’S – Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador has eased the punishment for residence students caught with small amounts of marijuana.
A CBC report said that last year, expulsion from residence was the consequence for students caught with one joint. Now, student union officials say those caught with marijuana would be subject to a fine along with a warning that being caught a second time could result in them being kicked out of student housing. The new rule applies only to on-campus housing but not to any other parts of the university.
