Collections, exhibits online
October 16, 2009
Providing a place for the campus community to learn about collections and exhibits, including some very rare items, was the catalyst for a new web magazine produced by University Archives.
Mirabilia, to be published annually with a regularly updated calendar, will feature holdings by the University Art Collection, Diefenbaker Canada Centre, Museum of Antiquities, University Archives and University Library Special Collections. The idea to publish Mirabilia stemmed from a book published last year entitled Lights to Each Other which featured material from all of the cultural units on campus, according to Archivist Cheryl Avery.
“We wanted to highlight some of the resources but also to help show how these resources could be used in combination in an interdisciplinary action,” said Avery. “We wanted a venue to highlight the whole collection, including lesser known items.”
Avery said this magazine will alert people to the richness of resources available on campus, since many of the items are used in unusual ways. “People will be surprised and amazed at the richness of resources we’ve got on campus. It is not unusual for these resources to be used locally, nationally and internationally.”
