Mini trade show for Grade 9 students
October 30, 2009
Take Your Kids to Work Day, an annual event for grade nine students in Canada that is taking place Nov. 4, has been taken to a new level by Facilities Management Division (FMD).
The unit is opening its doors from 10 - noon to allow the kids of all U of S employees access to their building and to information about the 23 professions represented by FMD employees. Anyone who wants to attend this year's mini trade show with their grade nine student can simply use the front door at 110 Maintenance Road. The trade show will feature information about various professions as well as demonstrations and hands-on experiences.
“Because we are blessed to have so many professions under one roof and it's such a good opportunity for kids, we've opened it up,” said Val Szydlowski, manager of communications and divisional services with FMD. “We try to showcase different parts of educational opportunity.”
Although the Take Your Kids to Work Day event has existed for about 10 years, FMD expanded it last year to other units and received such positive feedback they decided to open it this year to anyone on campus. “All of our people are so proud of what they do and it was really evident last year,” Szydlowski said. “It gives students a chance to explore what's out there and emphasizes the importance of staying in school.”
