Thacker
Phil Thacker, professor in the Dept. of Animal and Poultry Sciences, has received the Canadian Animal Industries Award in Extension and Public Service. Sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Canada, the Canadian Pork Council and the Chicken Farmers of Canada, the award was presented at a meeting of the Canadian Society of Animal Science.
Monture
An honorary doctor of laws degree has been awarded to Patricia Monture, Dept. of Sociology, by Queen’s University, recognition in part for her work as a supporter of justice for Aboriginal Peoples.
Gonyou
Harold Gonyou, research director and research scientist in ethology at the Prairie Swine Centre, was presented with the Award for Technical Innovation in Enhancing Production of Safe and Affordable Food at a meeting of the Canadian Society of Animal Science. The award recognizes excellence in innovation and teaching.
Kasap
Safa Kasap, professor of electrical and computer engineering and Canada Research Chair in Electronic Materials and Devices, was among the 42 new Fellows recently inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering. The induction recognizes Kasap’s contributions to the science and technology of amorphous semiconductors.
Entwistle
Gary Entwistle, associate dean of research and faculty affairs in the Edwards School of Business, has been elected president of the Canadian Academic Accounting Association for 2009-10.
Paulson
Joanne Paulson, former business editor with the StarPhoenix, has joined the Johnson-Shoyama School of Public Policy in the position of research communications officer.
Kinzel
The College of Education has announced a number of faculty and seconded teacher appointments: Audrey Kinzel joins the Dept. of Educational Psychology and Special Education from private practice as a psychologist.
Brenna
Beverley Brenna joins the Dept. of Curriculum Studies in January 2010. She is currently completing her PhD in elementary education at the U of A.
Orlowski
Also joining curriculum studies in January is Paul Orlowski, who is currently head of the teaching education program at the University of the Fraser Valley.
Epp
Marg Epp began work in curriculum studies July 1 after serving as a learning support facilitator in the Prairie Spirit School Division.
Sacher
A former high school teacher and counselor with the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, Constance Sacher has also joined curriculum studies.


Sharma, Bergstrom and Tabil
Two appointments have been announced in the College of Engineering: Jitendrapal Sharma from civil and geological engineering has been named acting associate dean of student affairs; and Don Bergstrom, most recently head of mechanical engineering in the college, will take on the position of associate dean of faculty relations. In recognition of his research, teaching and student advising work, Lope Tabil, head of agricultural and bioresource engineering in the College of Engineering, has been awarded the Canadian Society for Bioengineering’s John Clark Award.
Saxena
Dr. Anurag Saxena, professor of pathology, has been appointed to a five-year term as assistant dean, postgraduate medical education in the College of Medicine The appointment was effective July 15.
Skurdal
Randy Skurdal has been appointed manager of new media in Education Media Access and Production (EMAP). He moves from the position of media developer.


Green, Molloy and Matiko
University Advancement has announced the appointment of new college development officers: Lisa Green has moved from development officer in Pharmacy and Nutrition to a similar position with the Western College of Veterinary Medicine; Jennifer Molloy will move Sept. 15 from projects co-ordinator in University Advancement to development officer in the College of Law; and Fred Matiko has taken the development officer position with the College of Medicine after a career with SaskTel.
Albritton
The Canadian Association of Nigerian Physicians and Dentists has awarded Dean of Medicine Dr. William Albritton a special citation in recognition of his leadership in medical education and activities in promoting diversity.

Koehncke and Backman
The School of Public Health Students Association has awarded Niels Koehncke, associate professor, with its teaching excellence prize. They also presented Allen Backman, associate professor, with its most approachable faculty award.
Kalra
Dr. Jay Kalra, professor of pathology, recently presented two papers – on quality assessment in medical findings and quality perspective on disclosure of medical errors – at the joint meeting of the Canadian Quality Congress and World Congress for Total Quality Management. He was also part of a panel discussion on quality healthcare.
