Concrete and reinforced steel beams from old U of S buildings sit in piles near Innovation Place so the materials can be separated and used again for new construction.

According to Ron Cruikshank, director of projects and engineering with the Facilities Management Division, equipment will be brought in to separate the concrete, which will be crushed to make gravel, and the steel, which will be sent to a plant for re-melting.

Most of the rubble comes from demolition of the Health Research Building at the Academic Health Sciences site. The gravel will most likely be re-used as the base material for roads and parking lots while the steel will be melted down for new beams.
