Too much technology

CALGARY – A committee at the University of Calgary is looking at whether there should be rules to control the use of computers and smart phones in class. According to the CBC, both professors and students have complained that texting, tweeting and checking Facebook have gotten out of hand. The committee has surveyed instructors, students and administrators, and is expected to have its report ready by June.

Canadian Tire makes the save

HALIFAX – Canadian Tire has donated $60,000 to support the Saint Mary’s University women’s hockey team after the university announced earlier this month it would end the program due to a lack of funding. In a news release, Saint Mary’s President Colin Dodds admits the decision to end women’s varsity hockey in response to budget pressures “was wong and we deeply regret it.” Efforts are underway to establish an association that will generate funding for women’s hockey and other sports.

Gift to medicine

VANCOUVER – UBC has announced the largest gift to date to the Faculty of Medicine - $15 million – to build a new facility that integrates brain research and patient care. The Djavad Mowafashian Centre for Brain Health bears the name of the donor who has a long history of philanthropic efforts directed at health and education.
