AROUND THE BOWL

  • Dr. Reuben Mapletoft, Prof. and Head of the Dept. of Herd Medicine and Theriogenology, was presented with a Distinguished Service Award by the International Embryo Transfer Society at its meeting earlier this year in Maastricht, Netherlands. This is only the third such award in the society’s history. Dr. Mapletoft has a distinguished research career and provides a high standard of clinical care. He has started the careers of many veterinary students who have become influential members of the discipline.


  • Rev. Dr. William Richards, who has worked the past year as an interim replacement professor in the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad, has been named Professor of New Testament Language and Literature in the College. Richards holds degrees in astronomy, math and theology, and speaks or reads seven languages. He was ordained in 1978 and has ministered in churches across Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.


  • Dr. William Harrison, an Anglican theologian from Ottawa, has been hired as the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad’s new Professor of Anglican Studies and Theology. Harrison has lengthy experience teaching clergy, seminarians and lay people, and has a passion for classic texts from various philosophical and religious traditions. He recently earned his PhD in Systematic Theology. He will begin teaching at the College in the Fall.


  • Dr. Ron Sutherland, Prof. and Head of the Dept. of Chemistry, recently returned from Copenhagen, Denmark, where he gave the keynote speech to the annual meeting of the Nordic National Authorities responsible for implementing national obligations for the Chemical Weapons Convention. His talks was entitled: "Chemical and Biological Weapons – Proliferation and Non-proliferation, and Conventions for their Control."


  • Dr. Herb Yang, Prof. of Computer Science, has just won an Honorable Mention from the Pattern Recognition Society for his paper, "Classifier Design with Incomplete Knowledge", which was co-authored with Russ Muzzolini, a former Computer Science PhD student, and Dr. Roger Pierson, Prof. of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences.
