Around the Bowl
- Peggy McKercher has been re-elected U of
S chancellor by acclamation, for an additional
three-year term. She has served in the position since 1995,
when she replaced Ted Turner. Also elected by
acclamation to the University's Senate are James
Weseen (re-elected for Melfort-Tisdale) and
Trevor Forrest (new for Dundurn-Delisle),
both for three-year terms. Running for election in
the Maple Creek-Shaunavon district are Irene
Ahner and Eileen Hartman. Ballots will be issued in
the spring edition of the alumni tabloid The Green &
White.
- Dr. Rick Bunt, of Computer Science, has
been appointed acting associate dean (academic) of
the College of Arts and Science for the period July 1,
1998, to June 30, 1999.
- Dr. Marie Battiste, of Educational Foundations,
has been appointed to the 21-member board of
governors of the International Development
Research Centre, a public corporation established in 1970 to
help developing countries find solutions to social,
economic, and environmental problems through research.
- Dr. Nick Low, of Applied Microbiology
and Food Science, has been appointed chair of
NSERC's Plant Biology and Food Science Grant
Selection Committee, adjudicating grant applications for
the 1998-99 competition.
- Mike McGillivray, after five years
in Computing Services, has been appointed
informations systems auditor, Division of Internal Audit, effective
April 1, 1998. Initially, he will be involved in the
About-US (HRMS) project and the upgrade to the Financial Records
System.
- Professor Ron Sutherland, head, Department
of Chemistry, recently returned from an
international symposium on the destruction of chemical
weapons, held in Munster, Germany, where he presented an
invited paper to some 200 experts from North
America, Europe, Russia, and Japan.
- Professor Mel Hosain, of Civil Engineering, will be in China
and
Pakistan from April 10 to 24 as a member of a five-person delegation for
the
Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. He will
be giving a series of composite construction workshops.
- James Dobchuk, of Alumni and
Development, has taken a position with Cameco
Corporation, where he will be working in the
Marketing Department.
