Electronic sign ‘cheapens’ beautiful U of S campus

To the editor:

I wholeheartedly agree with Darrell Broughton’s letter objecting to the flashing sign at College and Wiggins ( On Campus 04/02/00 ).

Even when Coca-Cola’s logo isn’t on display, the sign remains entirely inappropriate to the character of the place.

The University’s mission statement proclaims: "We value our campus as a place of inspiration and beauty."

So when every passing motorist is greeted by red flashing lights so tawdry that they might as well be spelling out "Whores-R-Us", one has to concede that a mistake was made.

The sign diminishes the campus both as a place of inspiration and as a place of beauty. The few acres upon which the University of Saskatchewan sits have been described as the most valuable and productive in all the province. As such they deserve to be treated with the utmost dignity.

Like Broughton, that sign embarrasses me. It cheapens an otherwise beautiful and inspiring campus.
