Professor Del Fredlund, of Civil Engineering, is
the winner of a 1999 Scotiabank-AUCC Award for Excellence
in Internationalization, research category. From
sabbatical research he conducted into soil conditions in the
Red River Basin, Vietnam, he formed a relationship between the U of S and
two Vietnamese institutions that now has experts
addressing ground water and land management problems
in that country.

The Canadian College of Microbiology, a
national organization responsible for registering and
certifying microbiologists, has appointed
Professor George Khachatourians, of Applied Microbiology,
to a three-year term on its board of directors.

Dr. Graham Jones has been re-appointed
associate dean (research) in the College of Agriculture
for the period July 1, 1999, to June 30, 2001, a
position he has held since 1994, following his headship
of Applied Microbiology and Food Science.

Dr. Mik Bickis has been appointed head
of Mathematics & Statistics for the periods January
1, 1999, to June 30, 1999, and July 1, 2000, to
June 30, 2004.

Professor David Newhouse, 1998-99
Aboriginal Scholar in Residence, Commerce, will be leading
the inaugural set of graduate seminars examining
Aboriginal management and organizational issues, jointly
sponsored by Commrece and the FSIN, with support from the
Offices of both the President and the Vice-president (academic).
He is also a faculty member at Trent University.
