Student Health Centre improves its services

The U of S Student Health Centre (SHC) has announced that, based on the results of its 1997 student health needs assessment survey, it has made at least half a dozen changes to improve its service to students.

In a Jan. 12 news release, the Centre states its needs assessment, which surveyed more than 1,600 U of S undergraduates, found that the No. 1 health concern among students is stress, followed closely by sexual health, fitness, drug and alcohol abuse, and nutrition.

The survey included questions on issues like general health; stress and emotional well-being; tobacco, alcohol and drug use; nutrition, exercise and fitness; preventive health; sexual health; and SHC services.

The result was 12 recommendations to guide future SHC programs – and changes already made include:

  • A dietitian at SHC gives students nutritional counselling.

  • A social worker at SHC helps students.

  • SHC staff support sexual assault awareness activities.

  • SHC uses health promotion and social marketing strategies for health education.

The complete survey report can be seen at website: http://www.usask.ca/sas/shc/projects.htm
