Knott honored with Order of Canada

Doug Knott

Gov-Gen. Adrienne Clarkson announced Jan. 11 that Doug Knott, U of S Prof. Emeritus of Crop Science and Plant Ecology, has been appointed a member of the Order of Canada.

Knott, 72, was among 53 members appointed from across the country, and was appointed in recognition of his contribution to science in Canada.

Knott’s Order of Canada citation notes that "he is internationally recognized for his major contributions to our understanding of rust resistance in wheat.

"He is also credited with the development of several improved varieties of durum wheat. Over the years, his work has had a direct impact on the production and export of Canadian Wheat."

Knott is a fellow of the Agricultural Institute of Canada, and has been inducted into the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame. He has also been named to the province’s Sports Hall of Fame for sports administration in soccer, tennis, track and field, and for being instrumental in the building of Saskatoon’s Field House.

Knott taught at the U of S from 1952-93.

He holds BSA, MS and PhD degrees.
