U of S to aid training excellence awards

The University of Saskatchewan is showing its support for organizations that do a good job of training in the province.

The University will contribute $1,500 to become a sponsor of the Saskatchewan Labour Force Development Board’s sixth annual "Training for Excellence Awards", to be presented June 15 in Regina.

The awards program recognizes organizations that improve the skills and knowledge level of Saskatchewan citizens.

It also recognizes innovative partnerships that promote a skilled workforce.

The Board also has a goal of full workforce participation by aboriginal people, and sees the awards as one way to promote that.

Training for Excellence Awards in 1999 were presented in the categories of:

  • Educational partnerships.

  • Promotion of aboriginal participation.

  • Career laddering.

  • Human resource planning.

  • Basic skill development.

The Labour Force Development Board states these awards "are the first of their kind in Canada."

Last year more than 25 organizations were nominated for the awards. Winners included Regina-area school boards, the LaRonge Motor Hotel and Lac LaRonge Indian Band, and the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool.
