Council endorses creation of Instructional Dev. Centre

In a move to encourage excellent teaching on campus, U of S Council at its Sept. 16 meeting gave approval in principle to establishment of a Teaching and Learning Centre.

In a news release following the meeting, Council Chair Ron Cuming said, "Since 1977 the University has worked to improve the quality of instruction through its Instructional Development Program (IDP)."

He said over the years the IDP has run both formal and informal programs that give instructors information and resources to assess and develop their instructional skills.

The new Teaching and Learning Centre will provide educational programs on a continual basis for all instructors, both new and experienced, to support a wide range of teaching approaches and methods – including the use of technology in instruction.

The go-ahead to develop plans for the Centre follows a decision by the Board of Governors to allocate $70,000 per year from the operating budget to support instructional development, beginning in 1998-99. This money will be added to the annual allocation of $40,000 received from a trust account.

Building on the Instructional Development Plan, the Teaching and Learning Centre will offer consultation services to meet the needs of individual instructors, departments or colleges.

As well, the Centre will provide opportunities to facilitate research in teaching, an inventory of campus expertise in instructional development, and the opportunity to network and collaborate with College Teaching Committees across campus.

Endorsement of the Teaching and Learning Centre follows a period over the past year of study of the proposal by Dr. Gwenna Moss, head of instructional development in Extension Division.

The goals of the new Centre are to offer "teaching development" that enhances student learning, enhances development of teacher-scholars, is based on sound pedagogy, supports the U of S program, and builds a network that celebrates and rewards teaching.
