  • AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR QUALITY (ASQ)

    The Saskatchewan Section Quality Forum ‘99 will be held on Wed., Oct. 20, at the Saskatoon Inn from 8:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The forum is part of an international celebration sponsored by the ASQ throughout the month of Oct. every year. This year’s theme is "Traditional Methods in Non Traditional Areas". Speakers will be Saskatoon Fire Chief Bill Hewitt and David Barnes from American Express Canada. Registration fee $45.   • CDN. FED’N. OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN

    All women university graduates are invited to the monthly meeting of the Canadian Federation of University Women (Saskatoon club) on Mon., Oct. 4. This will be a special program and potluck supper at 6:00 p.m. at Grosvenor Park Church to honor the club’s 12 University Scholarship winners.


  • OPEN HOUSE

    Sat., Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. the public is invited to a viewing of the new Lutheran Campus Centre under construction directly across the street from the U of S, at the corner of College and Wiggins. The open house will be followed by coffee and dessert. The new Centre will be a multi-purpose building with a student residence, chapel, and drop-in centre open to all students, faculty and staff.

    8:00 p.m., Mon., Oct. 4, the launch of U of S English Prof. Peter Stoicheff’s CD, entitled Cantos I: guitar, will be held at Amigo’s, 632 - 10th St. E. Hosted by Titles Bookstore.

  • CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION

    Oct. 22 - 23 (Fri.-Sat. noon) at Royal University Hospital, the Dept. of Medical Imaging, the Dept. of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, and the Div. of Continuing Medical Education will present a conference on Obstetrical Ultrasound: From Conception to Delivery. The conference is directed to radiologists, obstetricians/gynecologists, and sonographers. Allied health professionals welcome.

    • Tues., Oct. 5: Guest speaker, Terry Evanshen, (1998 CFL Hall-of-Famer), Place Riel Theatre, Noon - 1:30 p.m. After a vehicle accident and month-long coma, Terry awakened to discover he was suffering from permanent loss of long-term memory and impaired short-term memory. Hear his powerful and inspiring story.

  • ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

  • 18th CENTURY STUDIES – DINNER & TALK

    The next no-host dinner gathering of "18th-Century Studies at the U of S" (Research Unit) will be held in Marquis Hall, Selkirk Rm. on Thurs., Oct. 14. After food and wine, Gordon DesBrisay (History) will give a talk and answer questions on "Poor Aberdeen: Poverty and Community in an Early Modern Town". Prof. DesBrisay says: "This paper seeks to disrupt your digestion by exploring the links between poor relief, social control, and communal membership in the Scottish city of Aberdeen during the generally difficult and occasionally disastrous period from 1630-1700. Was the war on poverty waged with anything like the zeal of the war on sin? What did it mean to be poor in Aberdeen? And what did it take to get by?"

  • FIRST NATIONS WOMEN’S CONF.

    Oct. 14 & 15, 7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Saskatoon Inn, Women of the Dawn will host a conference, Empowering First Nation Women in First Nations, Provincial and Civic Governments. Designed for First Nations women who want to become more involved in local and provincial politics. As First Nations people move towards self-government there is a growing need for women leaders.

    The conference is being held in conjunction with Women of the Dawn’s First Nations Awards Ceremony. All participants in the conference will be able to attend the Awards Ceremony, banquet and dance. For info. call 651-3718.


  • MANAGEMENT OF COMMON MEDICAL PROBLEMS

    Nov. 19 and 20, the Div. of Gastroenterology and Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development will present a conference on Practical Management of Common Medical Problems. The conference is directed to family physicians, but other health professionals are welcome to attend. Guest faculty are Dr. Charles N. Bernstein, Assoc. Prof. of Medicine and Dir., U of Manitoba Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinical & Research Centre, and Dr. Helen Hays, Assoc. Clinical Prof. of Family Medicine, U of Alberta.   • PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT & RECOGNITION SYMPOSIUM

    Oct. 29 & 30, Centennial Auditorium. "Building Capacity for PLAR in Saskatchewan" will feature faculty panels from the 10 PLAR pilot projects already underway at the Universities of Saskatchewan and Regina. Four panels of learners who would benefit from PLAR will also share their stories.

  • U of S OBSERVATORY VIEWING

    The U of S observatory will be open to the public on Saturday evenings from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. The observatory is located on campus, one block north of Wiggins Ave. and College Dr. Admission is free. On clear evenings, visitors may look through the telescope to view the Hercules star cluster, the Ring Nebula and other celestial objects.   • WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH KICKOFF

    The Women’s History Month Collective invites everyone to our opening event Sun., Oct. 3 from 2 - 4 p.m. at the W. A. Edwards Family Centre, 333 4th Ave. N., Saskatoon. This year’s theme is "Women and Activism" and National Farmers Union past president Nettie Wiebe will speak. The Collective will honor 12 local women activists who have made a difference in the community – some of whom are staff and faculty from the U of S. Admission is free.   • WOMEN MENTORING WOMEN KICKOFF

    There will be a meet and greet for the Women mentoring Women program, in the Upper Mub on Oct. 30 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. The U of S Women’s Centre is looking for profesional women to mentor young female students. Young women need to know what they face in the professional field, and this is an excellent way to gain knowledge and make new friends for both sides of the relationship. Mentors are needed to help students with overcoming stereotypes, blancing work and personal life and choosing the right career path. We encourage mentors to invite the students to their workplace for a day (or half a day) to observe and learn. To register, contact the Women’s Centre at 966-6980 before Oct. 23 to reserve a seat.


  • U OF S WOMEN COFFEE PARTY
