Dr. Reuben Mapletoft has been appointed Head of the Department of Herd Medicine and Theriogenology in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine for a five-year term, beginning July 1, 1999. Since 1977 Dr. Mapletoft has led major research into embryo transfer in cattle.



Doug Archibald has been appointed Director of Budget Management in the Financial Services Division, as of Oct. 1. He will oversee budget preparation and work with the U of S budget committee. Archibald is a U of S grad in Economics. In 1998-99 he was financial system Y2K project manager for Saskatoon District Health. From 1992-98 he was senior financial analyst with SDH, and from 1989-92 he was budget manager with Saskatoon City Hospital.




Dr. Gordon Barnhart, Assoc. Director of U of S International and Special Adviser to the President on Government Relations, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP) Sept. 13. STEP is a partnership of 216 members, including post-secondary education institutions, and its goal is to promote sustained growth in the export of Saskatchewan goods, services and technologies.




Dr. Wolfgang Walz, Prof. and Acting Head of the Dept. of Physiology, and principal investigator of the Sask. Stroke Research Centre, is editor of a 1999 book published by Humana Press entitled: Cerebral Ischemia: Molecular and Cellular Pathophysiology. It deals with the damage a stroke does to the brain and the repair mechanisms the brain puts in place after a stroke.




Dr. R.M.K. (Roy) Wagner, has been appointed Associate Dean, Extension Division, effective from Sept. 1, 1999 to June 30, 2000. He will continue to serve as Director of the Centre for Second Language Instruction during this period.




Dr. Roger Pierson, Director of the Reproductive Biology Research Unit in the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology, formally assumed the Presidency of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society earlier this month at the Con-joint meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society, held in Toronto.


Evelyn Smith, Loans Officer in the Emergency Loans Office of Student Affairs and Services, was recently appointed to the board of the Canadian Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CASFAA), a sub-group of the Canadian Association of College and University Student Affairs and Services organization. Smith will serve as the Manitoba/Saskatchewan representative on the board, for a one-year term. CASFAA provides input to government on student financial aid matters. Smith has been at U of S since 1996.



Dr Peter Barrett, Prof. of Surgery (clinical) in the College of Medicine, was recently chosen president-elect of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). He will be installed next August when the CMA holds its 133rd annual general meeting in Saskatoon. Barrett, a Saskatoon urologist, has been active with the Saskatchewan Medical Association, has served on the provincial Physician Resource Planning Task Force and the Health Reform Advisory Committee, and has been president of the Saskatoon City Hospital medical staff.
