4th Spring Convocation ceremony considered

Rapidly increasing numbers of graduates and their guests attending recent U of S Spring Convocations at Saskatoon’s Centennial Auditorium have Registrar Ken Smith asking people across campus whether the ceremony needs to expand to four ceremonies from the current three.

"The Convocation Office could not fulfil all the requests for tickets for last Spring’s Convocation," with requests for 300 guest tickets going unfilled, Smith said in an Oct. 6 memo to deans, directors and others across campus.

Centennial Auditorium has 2,000 seats – so 6,000 are available in three ceremonies.

Yet, the total number of Spring graduates and guests at the ceremonies has risen from 5,948 in 1997, to 6,184 in 1998, to 6,405 in 1999. The graduate numbers attending Convocation rose from 1,430 in 1997, to 1,474 in 1998, to 1,583 in 1999.

"The number of graduates for Spring Convocation 2000 is likely to be at least as high as for 1999 – and probably higher," Smith says.

He says adding a second ceremony to one of the already-booked days could limit costs.

Smith asked memo recipients to reply by Oct. 25, so he can assess their views.
