Professor Marvin Eckroth, director of the Orchestra, reports that the 18-day tour was a thoroughgoing success, adding that everyone concerned was impressed with "the almost overwhelming hospitality" they were shown.
"It was pretty incredible throughout - the reception at the concerts, the meals, the graciousness generally. In three or four places where we performed, the local mayors were there as part of the general reception.
"The students felt very much appreciated. It was an excellent experience for the students, especially for those who had not been to this kind of thing before."
The U of S Wind Orchestra was selected to play at the eight-day conference on the strength of a taped audition involving 42 orchestras from 22 countries.
To pay for the tour, President Ivany contributred $25,000 from the discretionary U of S President's Fund and the Department of Foreign Affairs contributed another $25,000. The remainder came from the Gustin Bursary Travel Fund and various Orchestra fundraising efforts.
