Around The Bowl

When the following ‘Around the Bowl’ items about four new Health, Safety & Environment staff were published in our last edition, March 29, the photos that had been supplied were inadvertently left out of the paper.  OCN apologizes for the omission.  The items are republished here, with photos:

  • William Stewart has joined the Dept. of Health,  Safety & Environment (DHSE) on an interim basis as the Radiation Safety Manager.  He completed a Chemical Technician’s Degree (CCT) and a B.Ed. with a Chemistry Major from the U of S.  He has taught high school, worked as a Radiation Protection Technician and as Radiation Protection Supervisor at Cluff Lake uranium mine and has done radiation protection consulting work.  William comes to DHSE from the Canadian Light Source, where he worked for three months, and is here to assist the University Community in establishing, maintaining and improving radiation safety programs.  Stewart also teaches the radiation safety course and can assist with TDG shipping requirements.

  • Stephen Kranz has been appointed Chemical Safety Manager in DHSE.  He brings his Chemical Engineering experience from the pulping and dairy industries where he has worked in both the technical and production areas.  In this role, he is responsible for helping campus departments to develop and maintain their Chemical Safety programs.

  • Janice Lavoie joined DHSE in June of 2001 as the University Community Safety Manager.  Prior to that, she was with the Dept. of Security Services for 16 years.  Her responsibilities include the Violence Prevention Program and addressing issues of personal safety.  She also teaches courses such as Street Smart From 9-5, a program that focuses on defusing hostility and preventing violence in the workplace.

  • Deanna Orb has been appointed Chemical Safety Technician in DHSE.  She received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the U of S in 1990.  Previously, Deanna has been working as a chemical technician in collegial settings.  She is responsible for the lab safety inspections on campus.
