| Romanow gets U of S appointment -- But Royal Commission on Health Care may put off start
A position as a senior fellow in public policy in the U of S Political Studies Dept. was one of a number of appointments handed out to former Saskatchewan Premier Roy Romanow this week. At an April 2 news conference in the atrium of the Agriculture Building, U of S Pres. Peter MacKinnon announced Romanow’s appointment, effective April 1, which will be a joint position with the University of Regina. The former premier said he’s excited to begin work helping students and faculty in areas of governance, constitutional issues, and public policy. He said he is pleased to be able to stay in Saskatchewan and return "home" to his alma mater. Romanow graduated from the U of S with a BA in 1960 and an LLB in 1964. He also served as a visiting scholar of law in 1982-83 after losing his seat in an election. While he noted he turned down offers from other universities, including Simon Fraser, Romanow has also just accepted a visiting fellowship in the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont. And, after much speculation, on April 4 Prime Minister Jean Chretien announced he has appointed Romanow to head up a Royal Commission to investigate and report on future directions for Canada’s health-care system. He will likely hold cross-country public hearings and is to report back to the government in 18 months, by November 2002. It is expected Romanow will take an unpaid leave from his U of S position while he conducts the health-care study.
