Dr. Sakti Jana, Professor of Plant Sciences, has been asked by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, to carry out consultancy work over the next few months to develop a major strategy paper on Agricultural Biodiversity, specifically on aspects of conservation and sustainable use. Jana says the prestigious invitation will have him develop a paper that will be used in December for policy discussions.
The professor has been at the U of S for 32 years and have been working on these issues for nearly that long. He feels its an honor not only for him, but also for the University of Saskatchewan, that FAO came here looking for an authority on these matters of importance to world policy formation.
Over the years, Jana has done other international work having worked for the World Bank, on another occasion doing work for the government of Iran, and another time doing work for the Consulting Group on International Agricultural Research.
Jana says this FAO work will enhance his own teaching in Agriculture.
U of S International Research and Communications Officer Rob Norris says Janas latest appointment "is a perfect example of how international research projects support ongoing work on campus.
"The students will be big beneficiaries of this project," Norris says.
