Whatever these two bright, active young U of S students at left were thinking when photographed walking in front of the College Building in 1949, it almost certainly wasnt that they would be standing in the same spot 52 years later, still friends and now very accomplished women who throughout their lives have helped to lead the University and the province. (1949 Photo courtesy Peggy McKercher).
Sylvia Fedoruk, left in both shots, and Peggy McKercher were active student leaders in sports and University clubs, with Fedoruk gaining a BA in 1949 and McKercher a BA in 1950.
Fedoruk went on to obtain her MA in 1951, receive wide recognition as a physicist, and later become Chancellor of the U of S and Saskatchewan Lieutenant-Governor from 1988-94.
McKercher was recognized in 1989 as Saskatoon Citizen of the Year, became Chair of the citys riverbank governing body, the Meewasin Valley Authority, was invested into the Order of Canada in 1995, and that same year began a six-year stint as Chancellor of the U of S. At right, on June 28, 2001, in a break from their last Board of Governors meeting together, they recalled their earlier times together at the U of S.
