Finance Minister Paul Martin checks out the CLS synchrotron
As other federal cabinet ministers like Ralph Goodale, Brian Tobin and even Prime Minister Jean Chretien have done before him, on May 23, federal Finance Minister Paul Martin came to see first-hand what all the talk about the $173-million Canadian Light Source synchrotron was about.. Project Manager Mark de Jong took Martin on a walking tour of the football-field-sized facility, accompanied by U of S President Peter MacKinnon. The Finance Minister received briefings from CLS technicians on aspects of the science that will unfold in the synchrotron in the coming years. At left, de Jong and Martin get a overview of the booster and storage rings from the mezzanine level walkway. At right, de Jong explains how the synchrotron works, while MacKinnon looks on.
