Summer students gain synchrotron work experience
 |
| In May the Canadian Light Source (CLS) hired its first-ever group of 11 energetic U of S summer students. Here, posing Aug. 2 outside the facility, they include, from left: Top row: Regan Rayner (Engineering), Keith Perry (Electrical Engineering), David Beauregard (Electrical Engineering), Sheldon Smith (Physics), and He Liu (Computer Science); Bottom row: Stephan Norum (Electrical Engineering), Drew Bertwistle (Engineering Physics), Dusty Mack (Commerce), and Heidi Engel (Electrical Engineering). Missing were Chioma Okonkwo and Trevor Debler. The students are working in a variety of areas and departments at the CLS, including: business development, information technology, electrical engineering, computer stimulation, and installation of components on to the existing linear accelerator. Dusty Mack, marketing co-ordinator, says, "University has taught me business theory, but the CLS allows me to actually apply what Ive learned in a real business setting." Regan Rayner feels "this is a really good experience. This is the largest science project in Canada right now and this will be the only synchrotron in Canada. How many people can say they worked at the synchrotron?" |
