In 2000, three researchers from the University of Saskatchewan were awarded international internships by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture in Canada (IICA-Canada). Out of the 14 IICA awards granted to Canadian researchers last year, the University of Saskatchewan received the greatest number of these internships.
Two of the awards were earned by researchers in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, while the third went to a colleague within the College of Engineering. Andre Palasz, PhD, who works in the Department of Herd Medicine and Theriogenology, is cooperating with counterparts at Chiles Universidad de la Frontera in research relating to llamas. Gregg Addamms, PhD, from the Department of Biomedical Sciences, is working with associates at the Universidad Nacional Mayer San Marcos, in Peru on research relating to reproductive biotechnology in camelids. As well, John Headley, associated with the Faculty of Civil Engineering, is focusing his work on soils in sugar cane plantations. He is working with colleagues from the University of the West Indies, in Barbados.
The IICA is a specialized institute of the Organization of American States (OAS), which is centered in Washington, D.C. Canada joined IICA in October 1972 and remains the second most important financial contributor to the Institute. Canada officially entered the OAS in January 1990.
IICA-Canada is headquartered in Ottawa. It has three mutually reinforcing objectives:
First, it promotes career development in the agricultural sciences and sectors associated with rural development.
Second, it works to increase knowledge-sharing throughout the Americas, especially by supporting technical assistance initiatives.
Finally, it seeks to increase awareness and understanding of its ongoing conferences, dialogues and seminars in Canada and other countries in the Western Hemisphere.
